Analysis Use of Language

On magazine front cover the language used is extremely important as this is what makes people buy the magazine. However all magazines are different in the way they use language such as;
  • What words used.
  • How the words are placed on the magazine.
  • The punctuation used and where.
And much more. The following slide show compares two famous film magazines Empire and Total Film.

Analysis Narrative Structure

Opening - Introduces the setting and the characters.
Build up - Situations are created and relationships.
Problems - For the storyline to develop more.
Event - Solves the problem

Trailer
Narrative Structure
District 9 – Si-fi
This trailer follows the original narrative structure;
Opening – introduces the locations of the city and hints towards the story line.
Build up – introduces the main characters which are the aliens and their relationships with the characters around them in the film.
Problem – Music begins to be dramatic and loud with problems being caused. There is a lot of action taking place with planes flying around everywhere, guns shooting and fires covering the screen.

The aliens are what have caused these problems so this is the result of what the have done. Unlike the usual narrative structure there are no problems solved in the trailer which means that you would have to watch the film to find out how everything will be put back to normal.
Jane Eyre – Period Drama
Once again this trailer follows the original narrative structure;
Opening – Introduces the main characters however the problems have already occurred with the main character getting beaten. This helps to represent what the character is like in a way as the audience know instantly what her life consists of however the audience also know what the problem is based around.
Build up – Tension builds up with a lot of action and the music becoming louder and at a faster pace. The scenes are short and fast with a lot of action taking place such as horses galloping away and characters running away from things.
Problems – Even more problems occur adding to the tension of the whole trailer however these are love issues introduced where Jane meets a man she loves but is not aloud to be with him.

Unlike the usual narrative structure the problem is not solved in the end, there are hints such as Jane running away however nothing is clear. There are short quick clips which are all full of action giving away hints about the story line rather then how the problems are solved.

Prom – Teen Movie
Unlike the other two films this film does not follow the narrative structure; this could be based on the genre of the film.

Also another reason for this is as there is not really a strong story line and no main characters shown through the trailer just different personalities are represented.
HOWEVER
Opening – introduces the location which like most teen movies is based around a high school.
Problems – there are problems involved in the trailer such as difficulties setting up the prom, fires caused and heartbreaks.
Event – The whole film is an event and this is what solves all the problems, the prom ends out being great fun and an amazing time for all of the teens.

Overall i feel the genre and the story line make a huge impact on whether the trailer fits the original narrative structure.

Teen movies - don't have much of a build up however there are always little problems through out the whole trailer.

Si-Fi - Fits well with the narrative structure as there is always a lot of action and many problems that need to be solved. Also the location is always unusual so is shown instantly to create the mood of the film.

Period Drama - Always varies depending on the story line, however most of the time it fits the structure with many events going on through out.
